Hey, hiya, & hello

Welcome!

You likely already know me, at least a little, if you’ve found your way here, but here’s the down and dirty of who I am and what I bring to the table.

Hi, I’m Kym! I’m an agented author with Fine Print Literary Management. I wrote a “theatre kid” rom-com that is currently out on submission. I’ve also been a professional wedding photographer since 2019. So like, I LOVE love.

I wear “hopeless romantic,” as a badge of honor, and I’m a big fan of the whole “romanticize your life” mentality. Because let’s be honest. Art imitates life. The things that fill our lives inevitably inspire our creative endeavors. The media we consume, the activities we fill our time with, the objects we bring into our homes, they’re all part of our stories.

These are the details I’m thinking about when writing. The beautiful little things that make us feel human.

Which leads me to what you can expect to find on this corner of the internet. Here, you’ll find a curated blend of advice, recommendations, vision boards, giveaways, and sorta whatever is inspiring me in the moment. I’ll also share the occasional publishing/writing update for my work.

Here’s a small tasting portion of what’s to come, as well as access to all the previous month’s content.

Thank’s for being here. Chat more soon ;)

Much love,

-KD

The Soundtrack of your life…

Music is a HUGE creative influence for me. Being raised in a family of musicians, and having spent most of my life working in theatre, curating the soundtrack of my life is something I’m constantly thinking about.

My fellow writers all know the rush of making a writing playlist for a new project. Digging deep into lyrics and sound that encapsulates your story. For my non-writers, trust, it’s a very important part of the process.

As a vinyl collector my natural instinct is to listen to music album by album, start to finish, just as the artist intended. My best friend on the other hand? She loves to pick and choose which songs she’s in the mood for.

I’ve spent hours obsessing over my own work wanting to make sure my stories are perceived the exact way I envision them in my head. Hell, that’s human nature. We all curate the way we look, speak, and present ourselves to control our narratives, only for someone to take your song out of context and drop it into a playlist to further their own creative purposes.

But that’s good! Good art inspires more art, no matter how it’s consumed. Wether it’s the album as a whole, or a single song, the entire book, or a particularly poignant paragraph, people resonate with truth.

You can’t control how people perceive you, or your work. So you might as well make what you want, right? There’s something to be said about separating yourself from the audience. You’ll never be able to put your whole truth into your work if you’re bogged down, catering to the playlist-ers, the purists, and everyone else in-between.

Don’t be afraid to create from that squishy place beneath the sternum. That place that aches to let whatever it is that you make out. Don’t waste time or energy worrying so much about what people will think. Just let it out. Let the people make their playlists.

Main Character Energy

At the risk of getting too philosophical, I said I was going to share recommendations, so here’s my fave playlist habit!

I started doing this three years ago, and I’m never going back baby! Every year, I make a playlist for my age. I typically make them right before my birthday, but you can get started anytime.

This year I turned 32, so I made a playlist with exactly 32 songs. Next year, I’ll make a new one with 33 songs, and so on.

Some songs have lyrics that capture what I was feeling during that year. Some songs are new music that was popular or released that year, and some are old songs I found myself listening to on repeat. The method for picking is totally up to you!

If you want to feel like the main character, I highly recommend this! I’ve loved getting to go back and revisit playlists from previous years. It immediately transports me back to that time in my life.

A few of my friends started doing this too, so now we get to swap our birthday playlists every year and it’s been a fun way to connect through the music that has impacted us.

I’ve included my playlist for the year below, but I want to see YOUR yearly playlists! Send ‘em my way!
